Cyrus Pick Up FIVE What Hi Fi 2009 Awards.
Cyrus won a world record FIVE awards at the 2009 What Hi Fi Awards. All three CD players were best in class, with the CD6 SE winning product of the year. This the second year in a row Cyrus has taken a clean sweep in the CD category. The new Cyrus 8 XP d Qx Integrated Stereo Amplifier
The built-in DAC of the 'd'' models is the latest in a long line of top quality Cyrus DAC designs able to upgrade the performance of any digital source.
Combining the latest 'XP' series preamplifier with a newly revised 2 x 70 watt power amp has resulted in an integrated amplifier offering an unusually subtle and detailed sound. The power amplifier section is powerful enough for most listening rooms, reproducing bass instruments with strong and detailed confidence. PRE AMPLIFIER
The new Cyrus Pre XP d Qx Pre-amplifierHigh performance audio pre-amplifier. Uses Cyrus XP derived preamp technology. Based on circuitry developed for the DAC XP but with a more affordable DAC stage. The digital inputs can accept a wide range of inputs including USB digital feeds. The USB input has been designed so that the Pre XP appears automatically as a sound card to an attached computer. The Cyrus X Power
A switchable Stereo/Mono power amplifier based on the power amp layout of the Cyrus 8 XP. It is ideal as an upgrade to the integrated 8 XP amp or as a perfect partner to the Pre XP. Switching the amp into mono (bridging it) allows it to be used with another X Power to upgrade a system from 2 x 70 watts to 2 x 110 watts which provides a significant improvement in speaker drive.

Mono X - Power Amplifier
The Mono X is a dynamic mono amp conservatively rated at 150 Watts. However the dynamic power of the amp is capable of burst output (such as occurs in all music programmes) of over 1500 watts.
This dynamic amplifier requires a very special design to successfully provide the immense power required for a system sound as close to the original performance as possible. The power and subtlety of the Mono X combine to make it one of the world’s most able hi-fi amplifiers.
The Mono X power amplifier is packed with a long list of features including the famous Cyrus ‘zero-feedback’ circuit topology (delivering outstanding power with exceptional load tolerance), a massive power supply with many stages of voltage regulation and a sophisticated computer control system offering intelligent circuit protection, convection control to maintain the temperature of the amplifier within safe limits and local bus communications with other Cyrus components.
•The harmonic distortion character of the Mono X is closely aligned to the response of the human ear. As output level reduces to lower levels where the ear becomes most sensitive to these effects, the distortion produced by the Mono X falls below measurable limits the result is exceptional musical resolution.
•Power amplifiers have two primary tasks - i.e. voltage and current amplification of the input signal, to provide a large and powerful signal for the loudspeaker. Traditionally, in most power amplifiers, these functions are combined into one overall circuit topology. The Mono X splits these functions into dedicated circuits - the input voltage gain amplifier and the output current amplifier. The voltage gain amplifier uses a zero feedback complementary bootstrap cascoded 'class A' buffer which drives a precision resistor. The current developed in driving the resistor is mirrored in to another precision resistor which is 52 times greater in resistance. The voltage developed across the second resistor is 52 times greater, hence voltage gain. This voltage gain operation is buffered by a second zero feedback complementary bootstrap cascoded 'class A' buffer. The current amplifier is an error corrected bipolar emitter follower designed to drive equally well into all impedances. In the Mono X neither of these stages have any global feedback. The current amplifier completely isolates the precision voltage amplifier from the loading effects of the speaker. This arrangement enables the Mono X to preserve fine detail, even under the most arduous of dynamic conditions.

The PSX-R Intelligent Power Supply
Many of the Cyrus components can be further improved by adding this
regulated power supply. Like a giant battery, it feeds the sensitive circuitry with highly regulated power thus allowing you to realize the maximum performance from the system.
The Cyrus PSX-R is a 300W fully regulated DC Power supply designed to enhance the performance of the partnering Cyrus products when used as an optional extra. With its intelligent connectivity, the PSX-R automatically adjusts its output parameters to suit the partnering Cyrus component.
• A 300VA toroidal transformer with an enormous current delivery capability forms the front end of the PSX-R. The 30,000 microfarad slotted foil reservoir capacitors ensure that very low ESR and wide bandwidth are presented to the linear mode regulator stage that follows.
• The symmetry as a design objective set out in the Cyrus range continues to be an important topology feature of this wide dual bandwidth DC amplifier working as a linear voltage regulator in an identical manner for the positive and negative sides of the PSX-R.
• Current sharing fast double output power transistors ensure quick response in providing the demanded current from the partnering Cyrus unit. Low noise high gain amplifiers in a propriety design provide the remarkable load and line regulation afforded by the PSX-R.
• The intelligent nature of the control circuitry built into the PSX-R not only sense the requirement of the partnering Cyrus component but also relinquish the power-on control to that unit to allow ergonomic operation of the system. At the same time this elegant circuit protects against mal-operation of the PSX-R beyond the designed parameters.
• Connection to the partnering Cyrus unit is made through a quality XLR cable assembly that ensures tight coupling and minimal loss in efficient and fast energy transfer. In all instances except for high current applications the PSX-R may be added into the system without any changes to the existing components and by merely plugging the unit in.
• In low Power applications such as CD or DVD players the addition of the PSX-R provides a highly stable external Power with massive inertia which ensures ideal battery like operation for such units. In high Power applications, on the other hand, the PSX-R while establishing a very stiff voltage source behind the power amplifier, it successfully inhibits mains related distortions and charging spikes from reaching the signal lines of the amplifier.
• The quality lightweight die-cast enclosure of Cyrus PSX-R has a myriad of advantages both electrically and mechanically. The integrated heatsink design enhances the thermal efficiency allowing higher performance to size ratio. Additionally, the non-resonant nature of the alloy minimises microphonic effects, while its non-ferrous composition provides an effective shield from external electro-magnetic disturbances. This also eliminates coupling of the power transformer stray magnetic fields to the sensitive audio circuitry.

Cyrus CD8SE 2010 Version CD Player The CD 8 SE benefits from the latest Servo Evolution optical data control systems that greatly improve the integrity of the data we read from the CD. Internally the power supply design features twin, custom made, transformers each feeding individual highly regulated power supplies which in turn feed the 11 separate sections of the player.
The CD 8 SE’s outstanding performance can be expanded further by adding a Cyrus PSX-R power supply, which will help reveal subtle details within the recording; this has to be heard to be fully appreciated. The Servo Evolution Platform - What is SE?
SE stands for Servo Evolution. A ‘made for high-end audio’ CD engine.
Inside all CD players tracking of the laser is controlled by software that positions the laser.
Why is this so important?
Until now hi-fi CD players have been based around laser / servo parts designed for the mass market. Even high-end designers do this because they are readily available and because it’s very complex to design your own. However these kits of parts are primarily designed for low cost mass produced equipment like portable audio players.
Cyrus knows this is the biggest barrier to high quality so they have invested in engineering their own ‘made for high-end audio’ CD engine they call Servo Evolution.
Disc Players
DAC X+ - D/A Converter
Many Cyrus owners recollect the impact that the hifi industry felt a decade ago when Cyrus launched the Discmaster/Dacmaster/PSX-R combination. The combination set new performance standards for CD replay, featuring leading edge digital technology presented in a unique 4-box format.
The brief for the DAC X+ was to bring this 4-box formula up to date by taking the best DAC technology available today and building a class-leading stereo digital decoder to partner the CD8x and a pair of PSX-Rs. Adding a separate analogue pre-amplifier into the DAC X chassis upgrades the DAC X+ to the DAC XP+ which becomes the control centre for a high-end stereo system.
D/A conversion – At the heart of a quality D/A converter is the circuit that converts the digital source signals to analogue. Careful design of this circuit is essential to retrieve the true dynamics of the source signal and to minimise undesirable artefacts such as noise and distortion. The DAC X+ achieves this with a two stage upsampling design where all sources are initially upsampled to 192k before analogue conversion by quad high-precision 24-bit converters operating in a fully balanced configuration. The technical specifications endorse the quality of this stage with class-leading performance for THD and noise. The elevated 192k sample rate permits our designers to use far less aggressive analogue filtering techniques to remove undesirable out-of-band digital noise.
Jitter reduction - All audiophiles understand that low jitter is an essential requirement for the clocks and data signals passed within a D/A converter. In the DAC X+ the sophisticated re-clocking circuit measures the precision of incoming digital signals to determine the quality of the input source. High accuracy sources such as the CDXt SE+ CD transport are digitally re-clocked by a close tolerance circuit with triple quartz references. For signals from low accuracy sources such as personal computers the circuit automatically relaxes the re-clocking precision to ensure reliable signal recovery.
Sample rate handling – The DAC X+ is prepared for the wide range of sample rates available from today’s digital sources and beyond. Group 1 close tolerance performance is available for 32k, 44.1 k, 48k, 64k, 88.2k, 96k, 128k, 176.4k, 192k source material. For sources outside of Group 1 requirements, any sample rate in the range 32k – 192k is accepted. Non-stereo waveforms (surround sound etc) are identified and suppressed to avoid undesirable digital noise.
Digital output – An optical digital output provides a useful digital feed to send the signal from the selected source to digital recording devices or to a multi-channel surround sound decoder.
Power supplies –The DAC X+ power supply is a traditionally built linear design, with an oversize toroidal power transformer including twin windings dedicated to the digital and analogue sections and entirely separate power regulation for the DAC and analogue filter sections. Two-stage regulation is used for critical stages with remote shunt regulators located within the heart of the audio circuitry.

Cyrus CD Xt SE+
The CD Xt SE+ is the transport or disc spinning half of the ultimate Cyrus CD player system. At the highest levels of CD player development we have learnt that it is beneficial to separate certain sections of the CD mechanics from the low level decoding sections. The most successful way we have found to do this is to manufacture the player in two separate and isolated die-cast chassis. The benefits of this approach bring higher resolution, quieter background and improved imagery.
The SE engineering was originally developed for the CDXt. You can read more about Servo Evolution here, but in a nutshell, the SE brings the following key benefits;

- Less reliance on error correction
- Better signal to noise ratio
- Improved laser control accuracy
- Upgrade path from recent Cyrus CD players
We realised quite quickly that if we could incorporate SE across the range this would bring an economy of scale and therefore only a relatively small extra cost to each model, rather than loading all the SE development overheads into the high-end model CDXt. This is why CD Xt SE+ is (in the world of high-end audio) relatively inexpensive.
The ‘other half’ of the high-end CD playing system is a matching DAC called DAC X+. Separating the mechanical elements from the low-level decoding circuits offers significant improvement to the resolution of the audio signals. Conversely joining the low level analog signals, post DAC, with the preamplifier delivers improvements so we make a combined DAC and preamp model called DAC XP for the ultimate hi-performance solution. You have a choice between our high performance DAC X+ with our most advanced engineering or the preamp equipped version for the best systems. Being Cyrus, the multi-input decoder only (DAC X+) can be upgraded to full DAC XP+ dual mono, fully balanced preamplifier specification later on. So if the DAC XP+ is beyond your means initially, you can upgrade later and gain the benefits of the ultimate performance as funds allow.
This integration brings several benefits because, unlike the transport, the preamplifier benefits from it’s closer physical link to the DAC and a much smaller circuit topology.

Holding 5 Cyrus components the standard Tri-Arbour can be expanded in units of 2 by ordering expansion bases to accommodate systems as they grow.
As the main rack is only 24 inches tall it allows a system to be discretely housed in a traditionally furnished room. Imagine a full AV system so compact it fits beside the sofa!
